Home Affairs Minister and BPS Chief Sign Joint Circular to Secure Regional Support for 2026 Economic Census
Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian and Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti signed a Joint Circular (SEB) at the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Sasana Bhakti Praja Building in Jakarta on Monday (15/6/2026). The circular contains key points to guide regional governments in supporting the implementation of the 2026 Economic Census.
“We know that data is extremely important. Based on data, we can make policies. The more accurate the data, the better the policies will be,” said Minister Karnavian during a coordination meeting on regional inflation control, which was combined with the signing ceremony.
Minister Karnavian explained that President Prabowo Subianto has tasked BPS with conducting the economic census to obtain comprehensive data reflecting the current state of the people’s economy. This data is considered vital as it will serve as the primary foundation for the government in formulating various economic policies. Therefore, regional government support is needed to ensure the census runs optimally.
According to the Minister, this programme will also provide significant benefits for the regions. Through the economic census, regional governments will have accurate data to understand their area’s economic conditions and use it as a reference in formulating development policies. The data collection will be carried out by BPS officers spread across all districts and cities in Indonesia.
“This census, conducted by BPS in all districts and cities, is beneficial for all district and city governments to understand the economic situation in their areas,” he added.
Minister Karnavian specifically encouraged regional heads, including governors, regents, and mayors, to cooperate with local BPS heads to ensure the success of the 2026 Economic Census. He added that the signing of the Joint Circular provides a basis for regions to obtain economic data that has so far been difficult to access optimally.
He cited the example that economic data in certain special economic zones designated by the central government will now be accessible to regional governments. The availability of this data will complement the existing databases held by regional administrations. Conversely, if support for the census is not optimal, the resulting data could be less accurate, potentially harming the regions as they would not obtain a real picture of their economic situation.
