Home Affairs DG: 'Gerakan Indonesia ASRI' Must Be a Tangible Movement

Director General of Regional Administration Development at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Safrizal Zakaria Ali, has stressed that the Gerakan Indonesia ASRI must be realised as a tangible action through the involvement of all levels of regional government, down to the neighbourhood and village levels. He stated that the movement is not merely a slogan or ceremonial event, but must become a real movement, instructing regional heads to issue directives to all their staff and launch clean-up campaigns from the community level upwards. He also called for education and the setting of good examples for the public. Gerakan Indonesia ASRI is a follow-up to an instruction from President Prabowo, first announced at the National Coordination Meeting of Central and Regional Governments in early 2026. ASRI stands for Aman (Safe), Sehat (Healthy), Resik (Clean), and Indah (Beautiful), with ‘Safe’ interpreted in the context of health, cleanliness in waste management, clean toilets, orderly advertisement placement, and a clean and beautiful environment in all aspects. This serves as a strategic step to address current challenges, particularly issues of waste, public toilet hygiene, and the orderliness of advertisements that can disrupt a region’s order. Safrizal revealed that he had initiated this movement during his tenure as Acting Governor of South Kalimantan by planting over one million trees, and continued similar efforts while serving as Acting Governor of Bangka Belitung and Acting Governor of Aceh. He emphasised that the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) has been rebranded with a humanist concept as public helpers, with their primary duty being the enforcement of local regulations, but in a humanist manner rather than a repressive one that clashes with the community. He insisted that regional heads must ensure Satpol PP becomes a friend, protector, and servant of the public. The national commitment of regional heads was represented by West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah, who reinforced the crucial role of regional governments in realising President Prabowo’s vision. The Call to Action Indonesia Asri event series included a blood donation drive, a low-cost market, the presentation of awards to the Deputy Mayor of Malang and environmental activists, the provision of uniform assistance for community protection units, cleaning equipment aid, and the distribution of death benefits for members of the Malang City Community Protection Unit. The activity was attended by Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat, Malang Deputy Regent Lathifah Sohib, regional leadership coordination forums across Greater Malang, and regional heads from all over Indonesia who joined virtually.
