Hoax! Video of Thousands in Tehran Carrying Ali Khamenei's Casket
Jakarta – A post on Instagram shared a video purporting to show a funeral procession for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The post claimed that Khamenei had died as a result of a coordinated military attack from the United States and Israel. The post’s narrative also stated that “a sea of humanity in Tehran carried the casket of Ali Khamenei to his final resting place.”
However, does the video actually show thousands of people in Tehran carrying the casket of Ali Khamenei?
Fact Check Findings:
Based on fact-checking investigations, no official sources were found confirming that the video showed a procession honouring or burying Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Further investigation revealed that a similar video originated from a Facebook post describing a gathering of believers at the gates of the sacred Al-Kazimiyah shrine. The event in the video was actually a commemoration of the death of Imam Musa al-Kadzim, organised by the Shia Muslim community in Baghdad, Iraq, on 6 February 2024. Participants carried symbolic coffins as part of the commemoration. The event was not a funeral procession for Ali Khamenei.
Consequently, the claim that the video showed thousands of people in Tehran carrying Ali Khamenei’s casket is false information.
