Hoax! Photo of new single Rp5 million banknote
Jakarta (ANTARA/JACX) – A Facebook post has displayed a photo of several red banknotes with a denomination of Rp5,000,000, or five million rupiah.
The banknote features an image of the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, and was claimed to be a new denomination of currency.
The post was accompanied by the following narrative:
“Masyaallah, new denomination, one sheet worth 5 million. If you lose just one sheet, we’d be crying and rolling around.”
However, has Bank Indonesia really issued a Rp5 million banknote?
Explanation:
Based on our investigation, Bank Indonesia has never issued rupiah banknotes with a denomination of Rp5 million.
According to Bank Indonesia’s official website, the rupiah banknote denominations currently in circulation consist only of Rp100,000, Rp50,000, Rp20,000, Rp10,000, Rp5,000, Rp2,000, and Rp1,000. There is no banknote denomination of Rp5,000,000.
ANTARA also used the AI Detector Hive Moderation tool to examine the image in the post. The examination showed that the photo of the Rp5 million banknote is an artificially intelligent-generated (AI-generated) image.
Therefore, the circulating photo is not documentation of an official rupiah banknote issued by Bank Indonesia, but rather an AI-generated image.
