Hoax! Photo of new single Rp5 million banknote
A Facebook post displayed a photo of several red banknotes with a denomination of Rp5,000,000, or five million rupiah. The note featured the image of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, and was claimed to be a new currency denomination. The post included the caption: ‘Masyaallah, a new denomination of 5 million per note. If just one note goes missing, we’ll be crying and rolling on the floor.’ However, Bank Indonesia has never issued a Rp5 million denomination. According to the central bank’s official website, the currently circulating paper currency denominations are only Rp100,000, Rp50,000, Rp20,000, Rp10,000, Rp5,000, Rp2,000, and Rp1,000. There is no paper denomination of Rp5,000,000. ANTARA also used the AI Detector Hive Moderation to examine the image in the post. The results indicated that the photo of the Rp5 million note was an artificial intelligence-generated image. Thus, the circulating photo is not documentation of an official rupiah note issued by Bank Indonesia, but rather an AI-generated image.
