Hoax: Luhut says Indonesians who do not pay tax will have citizenship revoked

A Facebook post has circulated featuring a photo of National Economic Council (DEN) Chair Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan speaking at a podium, accompanied by a fabricated quote. The post falsely claims Luhut stated that Indonesian citizens (WNI) who do not want to pay tax should have their citizenship revoked and be told to become citizens of another country. The accompanying narrative also discusses tax compliance and government digital systems. However, a fact-check reveals no such statement was ever made by Luhut. The photo used is from March 2023, when Luhut attended the Digital Government Award SPBE Summit 2023 organised by the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform. In his actual speech, Luhut urged the public not to criticise the government without data-backed understanding, emphasised the challenges of governance, and discussed the ongoing development of digital government services. There was no mention of revoking citizenship for non-payment of taxes. The claim is therefore a hoax.
