Hoax: Komdigi blocks coverage of August 2026 demonstrations
A video circulating on social media has falsely claimed that the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) blocked media coverage of a demonstration in August 2026. The video features a woman stating that protests were widely discussed on social media but not reported by mass media, allegedly due to a block by Komdigi.
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has firmly denied the claim, stating that the government has never prohibited or restricted media outlets from covering demonstrations in Indonesia. She explained that the media has the freedom to report in accordance with Law Number 40 of 1999 on the Press, and that her ministry has never imposed any ban on journalistic activities.
Meutya emphasised that the government supports the media in delivering fast, accurate, and factual information to counter the spread of hoaxes and disinformation. She highlighted the crucial role of the press in providing correct information to the public, especially amid the proliferation of misleading content in the digital space.
