Hoax! Jokowi's lawyer Yakup Hasibuan did not say Jokowi's diploma was fake

A Facebook post claimed that Yakup Hasibuan, the attorney for Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), admitted that Jokowi’s diploma was fake and stated that he regretted being deceived by his client. The post also featured an image purportedly from the media outlet iNews. The narrative in the post read: ‘Jokowi’s Attorney, Yakub Hasibuan, Provides Official Statement That Jokowi’s Diploma Is Fake, Yakub Hasibuan Regrets Being Deceived by Jokowi. Yakub Hasibuan, As a Legal Counsel, I Know Very Well That People Who Like to Lie Can Be Seen From Body Language, Jokowi Is a Big Liar.’ The post was accompanied by the caption: ‘One by one exposed, Jokowi’s attorney gives an official statement that Jokowi’s diploma is fake.’ However, based on investigation, no official statement was found from Yakup Hasibuan stating that Jokowi’s diploma was fake or that he had been deceived by Jokowi. On the contrary, through its official Instagram account, iNews confirmed that the image using its media name was a hoax. The iNews editorial team stated they never created or published the content circulating on social media. Further investigation showed that the photo of Yakup Hasibuan in the post was taken from a Metro TV report titled ‘Fake Diploma Accusation, These Are 5 Figures Reported by Jokowi to the Police’. In that report, Jokowi and his legal team reported five individuals to the Polda Metro Jaya for alleged defamation related to the fake diploma accusations. Yakup Hasibuan explained that the report was aimed at several parties suspected of spreading slander against his client, not a statement that Jokowi’s diploma was fake. Thus, the claim that Jokowi’s lawyer, Yakup Hasibuan, said Jokowi’s diploma was fake and admitted to being deceived by Jokowi is false information or a hoax.
