Hoax! Iran demands Prabowo tends to Indonesia's poor
Jakarta – A post on Instagram social media falsely narrated that Iran, through Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi, rejected Indonesia’s invitation to mediate the conflict between Iran and the United States.
The post also claimed that Iran demanded Indonesia would better care for its own citizens, stating that many Indonesians still live in poverty.
The narrative in the post read: “IRAN Rejects Indonesia’s Mediation Invitation with the US: Better the P00R! We are not opening space for mediation with the US!”
The post included the following narration: “Regarding Indonesia’s mediation, it would be better to conserve your energy and time entirely for the interests of your own people who still lack many necessities, because we know your people there require your assistance and help more. You better just care for your people, please, I greatly appreciate your good intentions. But we do not accept any form of mediation with the US.”
However, is it true that Iran rejected Indonesia’s mediation invitation with the US and demanded that Prabowo tend to Indonesia’s impoverished citizens?
Explanation:
Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi did express appreciation for the Indonesian government’s good intentions in wanting to mediate between Iran and the United States.
However, on Thursday 5 March, Boroujerdi reiterated that Iran rejects mediation offers from several countries to ease escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
According to ANTARA, he stated that Iran will not conduct negotiations with the United States.
The statement was made when he was met at his residence in Jakarta, referring to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, which mentioned that Indonesia was ready to facilitate dialogue to create a more conducive security environment and President Prabowo Subianto’s readiness to serve as a mediator.
Boroujerdi also explained that Iran had previously conducted negotiations with the United States three times. However, according to him, each negotiation ended with violations of agreements or military action by the United States.
No official statement from the Iranian Ambassador was found stating that Indonesia should tend to the poor or denigrate the condition of Indonesian society as narrated in the social media post.
Therefore, the claim that Iran rejected Indonesia’s mediation whilst demanding Indonesia focus on its impoverished citizens constitutes false or incorrect information.
