Hoax: Gibran Convicted and Invalid as Vice President
A social media video on Facebook claimed that Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka had been convicted by a court, rendering his position as vice president legally invalid. The post also alleged that Gibran’s position as vice president under President Prabowo Subianto was nullified following a court ruling. The circulating narrative stated: ‘Gibran Convicted and Invalid as Vice President’. However, is it true that Gibran Rakabuming Raka was convicted and declared ineligible as vice president? Fact-checking reveals no official statements from the government or credible media confirming that Gibran has been convicted by a court or deemed ineligible as vice president. The Constitutional Court dismissed Case No. 141/PUU-XXI/2023 concerning age limits for presidential and vice-presidential candidates. This ruling upheld the previous final and binding Decision No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023. Furthermore, the removal of a vice president cannot be initiated through civil lawsuits or ordinary court rulings. The only process for removal is through constitutional impeachment by the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). Gibran Rakabuming Raka continues to serve as Indonesia’s vice president for the 2024-2029 term. Therefore, claims that Gibran was convicted and declared ineligible as vice president are false and constitute a hoax.
