Deputy Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI), Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW), has called on the international community to immediately act to stop the Zionist Israeli incursions, provocations, and occupation of the Ibrahimi Mosque and Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

He also requested that the Indonesian government strengthen its support for the relevant authorities in Jordan to ensure the salvation of Al-Aqsa Mosque and to halt crimes against this Islamic holy site.

“The actions of the Israeli occupation forces in illuminating the Ibrahimi Mosque with the Star of David symbol and hoisting the Israeli flag on its walls, as well as the ongoing incursions and provocations by Zionist Israel at Al-Aqsa Mosque, cannot be accepted by Muslims and violate international law that mandates respect for Islamic holy sites,” HNW stated in a written statement on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

According to HNW, these actions by the Israeli occupation forces have been condemned by several parties, including the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, which holds authority in accordance with international mandates for managing Al-Aqsa Mosque.

“This condemnation should be elevated to concrete actions, in line with the mandates and authorities possessed, so that crimes against Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Islamic holy sites in Palestine by Israel are truly stopped,” HNW said.

Furthermore, HNW stated that the international legal basis affirming the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex as an Islamic heritage is very strong. First, the UNESCO resolution, a United Nations body dealing with culture and education, has since 2016 designated Al-Aqsa Mosque as an Islamic holy site. This aligns with the authority granted to Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs to manage Al-Aqsa Mosque.

HNW explained that if traced further, the dispute over the management of Al-Aqsa Mosque has long been resolved by the international community, even during the British occupation, before the Zionists established the state of Israel. In 1930, a commission formed by Britain with the approval of the League of Nations resolved the dispute between Jews and Muslims regarding the Western Wall or Wailing Wall in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex.

The case, handled by three legal experts from Switzerland, Sweden, and the Netherlands, stated that Muslims hold sole ownership rights over the Western Wall because it is an integral part of the Haram-esh-Sherif area (Al-Aqsa Mosque), which is waqf property of the Muslim community.

In addition, the commission decided that Jews are granted access to worship at the Western Wall, but they must adhere to several prohibitions, such as not using the area around the wall for speeches, issuing political statements, or demonstrations.

“However, all these prohibitions have been violated by Zionist Israel, which continues to raid Al-Aqsa Mosque and carry out provocations under the escort of Israeli police who also arbitrarily close the mosque to Muslim worship, almost throughout the month of Ramadan until Shawwal. Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir even arrogantly visited Al-Aqsa Mosque, implying that the management and ownership of Al-Aqsa Mosque is no longer under the Islamic Waqf and Religious Affairs Board. This behaviour clearly contradicts the decisions of the international community,” HNW stated.

HNW hopes that the Indonesian government, as a founding country of the OIC established to save Al-Aqsa Mosque, and in accordance with its constitution supporting Palestinian independence with its capital in East Jerusalem, the location of Al-Aqsa Mosque, can enhance its role in protecting and saving Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Islamic holy sites in Palestine.

“Indonesia needs to actively collaborate with the OIC and other international communities, including providing strong and effective support to Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, which has authority in managing Al-Aqsa Mosque. This is very necessary, especially since President Prabowo has very good relations with the King of Jordan, who oversees Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs. To make it a constitutional legacy, Indonesia should save Al-Aqsa Mosque and liberate Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital,” HNW concluded.
