HNW Emphasises the Importance of Community Organisations' Role in Maintaining Harmony in Jakarta
Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia, Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW), received a visit from the leadership of the Inter-Community Organisations Forum (FLO), led by General Chairman Juaini Yusuf, in his office at Nusantara III Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta.
In the meeting, HNW emphasised the importance of the role of community organisations (ormas) in maintaining harmony in Jakarta as a major city, national barometer, and city designated as a global city.
He hoped that Jakarta and Indonesia in general would remain safe and harmonious amid global conflicts, including those occurring in the Middle East region.
According to him, global conflicts such as wars involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, which have the potential to damage international harmony, must serve as lessons for Indonesia, particularly Jakarta, to continue strengthening national unity.
HNW also revealed that he had once conveyed an idea in a Commission VIII DPR RI meeting that the Hajj pilgrimage, which involves the global community and is about to take place, could be utilised as an instrument of diplomacy to promote world peace.
“Indonesia, in accordance with the constitutional mandate, should use this Hajj as diplomacy to bring peace and stop the war. Convey to the warring parties to stop the war, respect the human rights of the global community to practise their religion, with Muslims performing the Hajj to Mecca,” said HNW in a written statement on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
He explained that the Hajj pilgrimage involves Muslims from various countries, including those currently in conflict. Therefore, that momentum is considered strategic for promoting peace and halting conflicts.
“If they stop the war because of the Hajj, and thereby feel the blessed peace, hopefully after that there will be no more war,” he said.
He added that efforts to maintain global peace align with national interests, particularly in creating conducive conditions for the people of Jakarta and Indonesia at large.
Jakarta as a Miniature of Diversity
Furthermore, HNW assessed that Jakarta has long been known as a city that lives in diversity. This is reflected in various community groups based on regions that even become regional identities, such as Kampung Ambon, Kampung Jawa, Kampung Makassar, to Kampung Bali.
According to him, this diversity must continue to be maintained by all parties, including community organisations (ormas), as a social force.
“Our nature as Jakarta residents is indeed tolerant and harmonious. With the spirit of Eid al-Fitr, we want to restore Jakarta’s nature, namely the spirit of togetherness,” he said.
He also appreciated the role of ormas as an important forum in strengthening brotherhood and unity amid diversity. HNW emphasised that the diversity of ormas—whether based on religion, culture, profession, or youth—is a great potential for building collaboration for the interests of the people of Jakarta and Indonesia.
He also encouraged the Inter-Community Organisations Forum not to focus only on ceremonial activities, but to contribute to solving problems in society.
According to him, ormas need to map out real problems in Jakarta, such as drugs, brawls, online gambling, online loans, terrorism, radicalism, and other social crimes.
“It is necessary to map what the most dominant problems in Jakarta are, so that each ormas can provide effective and measurable contributions,” he said.
HNW also emphasised the importance of utilising national and religious holidays, such as Eid al-Fitr, Kartini Day, National Education Day, National Awakening Day, National Sports Day, and National Defence Day, to strengthen solidarity among ormas.
“With the diversity of hundreds of ormas, if they focus on specific issues, their role will be significant in making Jakarta better,” he said.
He hoped that synergy between ormas and the government would continue to be enhanced, so that Jakarta not only becomes a safe and orderly city, but also a model of harmony and mutual cooperation for other regions in Indonesia.
On the same occasion, FLO General Chairman Juaini Yusuf invited HNW to attend the halal bihalal event scheduled for 18 April 2026 in West Jakarta.
He stated that the activity aims to strengthen solidarity among ormas while building synergy with the government.
“Hopefully, Pak Kiai (HNW) can attend as the Advisory Board to encourage ormas friends who are now starting to be harmonious,” said Juaini.
Juaini conveyed that FLO currently encompasses various organisations from diverse backgrounds. The halal bihalal committee also involves representatives of ormas, with a target of around 300 participants.
