HNW Condemns Israel's Attack on Lebanon Amid US-Iran Ceasefire
Deputy Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI), Hidayat Nur Wahid, has condemned Israel’s attack on Lebanon at a time when a ceasefire between the United States and Iran has been agreed upon. He calls on the international community to take firm action to isolate Israel from international relations, including expelling its membership from the United Nations (UN).
“Israel’s increasingly massive attacks, which have killed more than 300 civilians in Lebanon, were carried out precisely during the period when a ceasefire between Iran and the US had just been agreed upon at Pakistan’s initiative. These attacks, besides causing many deaths, also endanger the continuity of the ceasefire agreement for permanent peace, which is hoped for by all the world’s citizens affected by the global economic excesses resulting from the invasion of Iran,” he stated through a press release in Jakarta on Thursday (9/4/2026).
In addition to the attacks on Lebanon, Israel continues to carry out assaults and genocide against Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank following the establishment of the Board of Peace (BoP). In the current situation, as the US-Iran ceasefire begins to be agreed upon, Israel has even shot at civilians in refugee camps and killed an Al Jazeera journalist. This adds to the long list of journalists killed by Israel when peace or ceasefire agreements are reached.
HNW, as he is fondly known, supports Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who stated that Israel’s actions under Benjamin Netanyahu violate international law and can no longer be tolerated. Therefore, there needs to be a firm stance from the international community, particularly the European Union and its member states, to suspend any association agreements with Israel.
“Indeed, impunity for ongoing criminal actions that violate international law, as demonstrated by Israel, should no longer be allowed,” he said.
Furthermore, HNW stated that the Arab-Islamic world, particularly the Gulf countries, also needs to increasingly realise the dangers of Israel’s actions to regional stability, which is one of the focuses of the US-Iran ceasefire agreement.
“We have already seen the extraordinary global economic impacts from the war in Iran, besides the loss of lives and damaged infrastructure, the world order that is no longer respected, and now the ceasefire towards permanent peace is being sabotaged by Israel through provocations via attacks on Lebanon and Palestine,” he emphasised.
HNW hopes that Arab-Islamic countries, including some Gulf countries that have been swayed by Israel’s ‘sweet promises’ through diplomatic normalisation that could help Palestinian independence, will immediately reconsider and sever those diplomatic ties, as done by South Africa and several Latin American countries.
“Israel, with all its violations of international law, is the source of problems for regional stability that greatly influences global economic stability. It is only right that there is no ‘normalisation’ of such abnormal behaviour,” he said.
“If the call by Spanish PM for the EU to suspend its agreements with Israel, and some Arab-Islamic countries that have prematurely ‘normalised’ relations with Israel correct this by severing ties again, then Israel will be further isolated in the international community due to its crimes, international law can be upheld, and the hoped-for peace can be realised,” he concluded.
