Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving fishermen’s welfare through the construction of various supporting facilities for the maritime and fisheries sector. The commitment was announced during the 19th Plenary Session of the DPR-RI at the DPR-RI Building in Jakarta on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. In his address, President Prabowo said the government would build a range of supporting facilities, from ice plants, cold storage, fish processing units, to ship docking facilities. Additionally, the government is implementing the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih programme in various parts of Indonesia. The programme is expected to become a hub for strengthening the livelihoods of coastal communities while supporting improved living standards for fishermen and their families. Secretary General Lydia Assegaf of the Himpunan Nelayan Seluruh Indonesia (HNSI) said that building supporting infrastructure has long been a need felt by fishermen. She said HNSI also supports the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih programme, which is currently under construction in various regions. “HNSI fully supports the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih programme which is currently underway across Indonesia. This programme is a strategic step to strengthen the maritime sector and raise the welfare of fishing communities,” Lydia said. On the occasion, HNSI representatives attended the 19th Plenary Session of the DPR-RI in person as a form of public involvement of fishermen in the national development agenda, particularly in the maritime and fisheries sector.
