HNK Rijeka managed to secure a place in the round of 16 of the UEFA Conference League after achieving a crucial victory over the Cypriot representative, Omonia. In this emotional match, assistant coach Ramiro Munoz called the victory a “remontada” or a great comeback. Specifically, all elements of the team dedicated this sweet result to their head coach, Victor.

“First of all, congratulations to the players for the great match. In Spanish, we call it ‘remontada’, a great comeback. However, we really want to dedicate this victory to ‘Mister’ Victor,” said Sanchez (Rijeka coaching staff).

Sanchez added that Victor was still involved in the team’s preparation even though he could not be present in person. “He prepared this match with us. He supported us and deserves this great victory because he is our leader. We hope he can be back on the bench in the next round to enjoy a magical night like this,” he continued.

Rijeka experienced a difficult situation early in the match. They conceded a quick goal due to a misjudgment combined with an injury to defender Teo Barišic. However, this situation did not break the spirit of the Rijeka squad.

Ramiro Munoz revealed that the team had a brief evaluation in the dressing room. “Sometimes you have to ‘cook’ a match. It’s not easy to start a match by conceding a quick goal and an injury. However, the players showed their character once again, just like in Cyprus,” explained Munoz.

In the second half, Rijeka performed much more dominantly. “After we fixed a few small things during the break, the players seemed to ‘fly’ on the field. The support of the supporters is what we needed. We created momentum, scored three goals, and should have scored more,” added Munoz.

Munoz also revealed that he had briefly communicated with Victor during the half-time break to get strategic input. This proved effective in changing Rijeka’s game in the second half.

Regarding the condition of Teo Barišic, who suffered an unpleasant injury, the club is still waiting for further examination results. “He will undergo an examination on Friday. Hopefully, it’s not serious. He is a fighter and has shown it since the first day he arrived here,” Munoz concluded.
