HMI Mass Arrives at DPR Building to Protest

Hundreds of students from the Islamic Students’ Association (HMI) arrived at the MPR/DPR building on Jalan Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta, on Friday afternoon, 19 June 2026, to demonstrate against what they termed the wasteful programmes of President Prabowo Subianto. The mass of protesters, wearing green attributes bearing a crescent moon logo, conducted a long march along Jalan Gatot Subroto to the front gate of the DPR, arriving at approximately 3.25 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. Orators immediately began voicing demands from atop a command vehicle. The HMI crowd protested the increase in fuel prices and the wastefulness of the State Budget. The demonstrators also highlighted the unresolved welfare issues of teachers. Additionally, they demanded an evaluation of the free nutritious meal project. Students from Trisakti University are also set to hold a demonstration at the same location. The university’s Presidential Foreign Minister, Arief Rizquna, explained that the demonstration was not a spontaneous act but the result of consolidation and preparation carried out over the past few days. ‘We have been preparing for about two days, from consolidation and issue inventory to ensuring this accumulation of movement and anger can materialise into a movement,’ Arief said when met before the protest. The students are championing three main demands: national economic and political recovery, the eradication of incompetence among state officials, and the restoration of civilian supremacy. The protest in front of the DPR building is part of a series of movements initiated by the Trisakti Faculty of Law Student Executive Board to voice various issues they believe are increasingly burdening the public. The crowd asserted they will continue to oversee these demands until they receive a response from the government and the DPR.
