HK man gets 8 years for raping RI maid

HONG KONG: An unemployed Hong Kong man has been sentenced to
eight years in jail for raping his Indonesian maid, a newspaper
reported on Wednesday.

Chan Ka-man, 37, was accused of repeatedly sexually abusing
the 21-year-old victim, who was not identified, at his home
between July and September 2002, the Oriental Daily News
reported.

The newspaper quoted the judge as saying a heavy sentence was
appropriate because rape was a serious offense, and it was
particularly serious because virginity is highly valued in the
victim's native country.

Judiciary officials said they could not confirm the sentence.
