six-month humanitarian pause in Aceh to reduce the
number of civilian casualties, but tension
heightens as the military accuses GAM of consolidating
its forces.
Dec. 9,2002 Brokered by a non-governmental organization,
the Henry Dunant Centre (HDC), the government and
GAM sign a peace accord in Geneva.
Apr. 25, 2003 The government decides to pull out of the peace
deal after accusing GAM of violating some points
of the deal, including the disarmament agreement and the
acceptance of special autonomy.
May, 19, 2003 President Megawati Soekarnoputri issues Decree No.
28/2003 imposing martial law in Aceh.
Nov. 19, 2003 Megawati extends martial law for another
