Historian to receive honor

YOGYAKARTA: Leading historian Sartono Kartodirdjo of Gadjah
Mada University will receive an honorary doctorate degree in June
from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, for inventing the
"multi-visionary" approach to history.

Antara quoted a professor at the oldest university in Berlin,
Dr. Ingrid Wessel, as saying yesterday that most historians used
limited academic approaches, such as the political or economic
sides of history.

Sartono, by contrast, has succeeded in establishing a new
horizon in the way scientists approach the science of history,
Wessel said. Sartono's books are now a mandatory read for every
history student.

The honor will be given concurrently at the tenth European
Colloquium on Indonesian and Malaysian Studies on June 17 to 22.
