Historian Madjiah dies

JAKARTA: Matia Madjiah, a local historian, died on Monday at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Central Jakarta, where he was being treated for some time. He was 79.

He died while he was preparing the biography of Col. Djaelani, one of the brains of the Army's Elite Special Forces (Kopassus). The book will still be published, probably as early as one month from now.

Madjiah's body of work includes "The tale of a Guerilla Doctor in the Revolution for Independence in Banten", which was published by Balai Pustaka in 1986.

Madjiah is survived by three children.

He will be buried on Tuesday at Ciranjang cemetery in Cianjur, West Java, near his wife's grave. -- JP
