Himanu Secretary-General: NU Congress Results Can Be Annulled If Money Politics Proven

Jakarta – Secretary-General of the Nahdlatul Ulama Advocates Association (Himanu), Taufik CH, has stated that the results of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Congress can be cancelled or annulled.

This could occur if the practice of money politics in the election process is legally proven based on evidence that can be accounted for under the law.

The statement was made by Taufik in response to a question from Mimbar Muktamar NU moderator, Miftahul Ulum, during a live event for the election of Ahwa, Rais Aam, and Chairman of PBNU organised by Suluh Nadliyin at Al Maliki 2 Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Tambakberas, Jombang, on Saturday, 29 August 2026.

In the forum, the moderator asked about the mechanism for preventing manipulation in the election process, including possible sanctions if a candidate is proven to have engaged in manipulation or money politics.

Answering the question, Taufik asserted that candidates proven to have committed violations could face sanctions up to disqualification. “Yes, they can be disqualified,” said Taufik.

According to him, the practice of money politics does not always occur suddenly at the time of voting. Allegations of such practices, he said, can take place through a process of approaching voters or congress participants long before the congress is held.

“Money politics does not happen suddenly, but by process, long before the congress. Personal approaches have already begun, down payments have started to be made, and so on,” said Taufik.

Therefore, Taufik urged that if there are allegations of money politics, the supporting facts and evidence must be collected seriously. He said evidence in the form of video recordings and documents could be an important part of uncovering the alleged violations.

“If it is physically proven, especially if there is video, especially if there are important documents and the NU KPK can prove it, I will defend it as a lawyer,” he said.

Taufik also encouraged parties who have information about alleged money politics to collect concrete evidence. “If you can collect those facts, the videos and the evidence must be sought,” he said.

Furthermore, Taufik stated that the legal consequences of alleged money politics do not automatically stop at sanctions against the offending party. If the violation is proven and related to the election results, the congress decisions can also be called into question.
