A landslide occurred in the Menoreh hillside area of Kulon Progo, specifically in the Crangah settlement, Hargotirto hamlet, Kokap subdistrict. Debris from the collapsed embankment partially blocked the provincial road connecting Kokap and Girimulyo.

Budi Prastawa, head of the Emergency and Logistics Section at Kulon Progo’s Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that the landslide resulted from intense rainfall. The incident occurred around 14:30 local time on Friday, 27 February 2026. Light rain had fallen the previous evening, but heavy downpours began in the early morning hours following dawn prayers.

Prastawa explained that whilst the volume of soil material from the landslide was not substantial, fallen trees that were swept along have obstructed traffic flow and partially blocked road access. The debris remains on the provincial highway.

The incident has caused concern among local residents. One residential home positioned directly above the collapsed embankment is now threatened by potential further collapse. Prastawa noted that the home in Crangah faces direct risk from the unstable section.

As of the reporting time, BPBD Kulon Progo was unable to determine the exact dimensions or height of the collapsed embankment, as personnel at the site were still conducting initial assessments and response measures. Teams from the Technical Rescue Command (TRC) were mobilising to the location to carry out a full assessment.

Regarding the deployment of heavy equipment to clear the debris, Prastawa indicated that the agency had coordinated with the Special Region of Yogyakarta provincial government. He stated that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Public Works and Energy and Mineral Resources Agency, and the case has been reported to the provincial level for further action.
