Hillary Clinton Puts Up a Strong Defence in Epstein Case Hearing: "This is Political Theatre"
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has strongly criticised the House committee investigating her alleged links to the late Jeffrey Epstein. In her testimony on Thursday, Hillary accused members of the Republican-led committee of conducting a “fishing expedition” aimed at diverting public attention from the actions of Donald Trump.
In an emotional opening statement, Hillary described the hearing as “partisan political theatre” and an affront to the American people. She reiterated that she never met Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died in prison in 2019.
“You have forced me to testify, with the full knowledge that I have no knowledge that can assist your inquiry, in order to distract from the actions of President Trump and cover up his wrongdoing, despite the legitimate demand for answers,” Hillary stated in the closed-door hearing.
Hillary criticised the hearing procedures, which she claimed were designed to protect one political party and one public official, rather than seek justice for the victims. She also challenged the committee to be fair by subpoenaing Donald Trump to testify under oath.
“If this committee were serious about finding out the truth about Epstein’s human trafficking crimes, it would not rely on hearsay to get answers from our current president about his involvement; it would ask him directly, under oath, about the tens of thousands of times his name appears in Epstein’s files,” Hillary added.
The hearing was briefly adjourned after Hillary’s legal team protested the distribution of photos of the testimony on social media by a MAGA influencer. Taking photos during a closed-door congressional hearing is a serious violation of the rules.
The political drama is scheduled to continue on Friday, when former President Bill Clinton will give a deposition under oath. Unlike his wife, Bill Clinton admitted to flying several times on Epstein’s private jet for foundation-related purposes, but he strongly denied knowing or being involved in Epstein’s sexual crimes.
The chairman of the committee, Republican James Comer, stated that although there are currently no allegations of wrongdoing against the Clintons, the committee has many questions about the extent of their knowledge of Epstein’s and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell’s activities.
On the other hand, Democratic member of the committee, Robert Garcia, supported the subpoena of Bill Clinton but demanded the same treatment for Donald Trump. He pointed out that Trump’s name appears more often in the documents related to Epstein’s victims than Bill Clinton’s name.
To date, an estimated 3 million documents related to Epstein are in the possession of the Department of Justice. Hillary Clinton accused the Trump administration of continuing to try to hide the contents of these documents from the public. (The Guardian/Z-2)
