Hillary Clinton in Egypt on N. Africa tour
CAIRO (AFP): U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton, accompanied by her daughter Chelsea, arrived on her first visit to Egypt on Sunday as part of a North Africa tour to campaign for women's rights and promote U.S. ties with the Arab world.
Hillary was greeted on her arrival at the capital's international airport by Cairo governor Abdel Rehim Shehata.
From Egypt, the first lady will visit Tunisia and camp in the Moroccan desert before wrapping up her tour on April 1.
During her stay here, Hillary will dedicate a new hospital in Cairo, announce a new maternal health and pediatric program and discuss family planning at a clinic in Luxor.
On Sunday she is set to tour Islamic Cairo, namely the Citadel overlooking the Egyptian capital and Bab Zuweila Gate in the Fatimid quarters of Cairo and on Monday she tours Christian Coptic Cairo and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
She will address students at the American University in Cairo on Tuesday before flying to the southern Nile resort of Luxor where she will visit the Karnak Temple and other pharaonic landmarks.
In Tunisia on Thursday, Clinton will visit an education and training center for youths in Tunis that also runs a credit program for business women.
She will address women's organizations on the work to be done to improve women's rights and visit religious sites in Kairouan on Friday.
In Morocco, Clinton will address an education conference, visit a rural health clinic and talk about religious tolerance in Marrakesh. She will also visit Fez to inaugurate a maternity ward, visit a U.S.-supported low income housing site and spend the night in the desert.
