Hike in transportation fare

From Suara Karya

On July 1, 2000 the government introduced a hike in transportation fares, ranging between 30 percent and 40 percent. Unfortunately, this fare increase was not coupled with improved service. Ironically, the number of regular buses, for example, is fewer than before.

So, this fare increase is not a fair policy because a passenger paying more to travel does not enjoy better service.

It is true that the common people can do nothing but accept this fare increase. However, bus companies must not continue this resigned attitude, but change the quality of their service.

Many buses, for example, should be taken out of service because they are no longer roadworthy. Unfortunately, many such buses are still seen on the road.

In this respect, the government must prove that it really cares about its people and that it does not treat its people as mere objects.
