Jakarta, VIVA – West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, known as KDM, has called on engineers across Indonesia to carry out their duties in accordance with their professional code of ethics.

KDM said the provincial government needed engineers to resolve problems residents face in the short term and in their daily lives, such as traffic congestion and flooding in Bandung. Minor problems such as congestion in West Java’s cities have grown because transport systems have not been properly organised.

KDM therefore proposed replacing ageing public transport with new vehicles.

He made the remarks at the 44th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO 44), organised by the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) in Bandung, West Java, which began on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

“Drivers should no longer have to hand over their earnings to the vehicle owner. Instead, the system should be tailored to each area, with environmentally friendly vehicles that are suitable for children and pregnant women, while also ensuring drivers’ welfare,” KDM said.

The plan will soon be discussed with the PII. KDM also urged engineers to work in line with their code of ethics.

“In medicine, there is malpractice, which is then discussed by an ethics board and can lead to sanctions. Engineering is much the same: when problems arise because of poor planning or engineering and management errors, it must be openly discussed and responsibility identified,” he said.

The PII’s ethics board can impose penalties ranging from light sanctions to severe measures, including blacklisting engineers who breach the code of ethics from working in Indonesia’s real-economy sectors.

“Going forward, I hope the PII will strengthen the influence of its ethics rules so that people work in the interests of God, humanity and justice,” KDM said.

PII chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie said the association was ready to work with regional governments, including on transport.

“We are looking for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable form of public transport to replace these minibuses. The overall concept will still provide jobs for drivers; it will change so that drivers can operate as small businesses and own their vehicles,” he said.
