Highlighting the Malacca Strait, TNI Chief of Staff's Intelligence Assistant Gathers Riau Islands Intelligence
Responding to the increasing activities of foreign warships in the Malacca Strait waters, Indonesia must enhance its vigilance in that route. Major General Rio Firdianto, the Assistant for Intelligence to the TNI Commander, gathered unit commanders and TNI intelligence apparatus in Riau Islands Province (Kepri).
Major General Rio’s briefing to the ranks took place in the Ballroom of the Marriott Harbour Bay Hotel in Batam, Kepri, on Thursday (16/4/2026). The briefing emphasised the importance of readiness in facing increasingly complex global dynamics, from hybrid threats and inter-state conflicts to regional developments that could potentially impact national stability.
In the photo, Rio also discussed the impact of the Strait of Hormuz closure. “Intelligence apparatus are required to continuously enhance professionalism, early detection capabilities, and analytical sharpness to anticipate every potential threat quickly and accurately,” said Rio in a press release in Jakarta on Sunday (19/4/2026).
According to him, mastery of technology and the utilisation of social media are important factors in producing accurate, relevant intelligence products that can effectively support leadership decision-making. “Readiness and adaptation to developments in the times are key to maintaining the sovereignty of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia,” he stated.
Regarding the activities of foreign warships in Indonesian territory, Kadispenal Lieutenant Commander Tunggul confirmed the movement of warships crossing the Malacca Strait area. This had been widely discussed by netizens as it was suspected to be related to operations hunting an Iranian tanker.
