The Highlands Papua Provincial Government, through the local Department of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), has stated that the Trans-Jayapura-Wamena road section is still under construction to accelerate transport access and boost the economy in the region.

The Head of the PUPR Department for Highlands Papua, Tunggul W. Panggabean, stated in a written briefing in Wamena on Saturday that the Jayapura-Wamena road access is being worked on throughout this year.

“The construction of approximately 50 kilometres of road is being carried out to help ease transportation and stimulate economic activity in the Highlands Papua region,” he said.

“The roadwork will continue throughout the year for a period of 15 years, with funding sourced from a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the government and business entities. Funds will be continuously available to assist in the accelerated development of the Jayapura-Wamena national road,” he added.

He explained that the construction contract for the 50-kilometre Jayapura-Wamena national road will span the next 15 years and commenced in 2024.

He further noted that the Jayapura-Wamena national road section represents a significant hope for the Highlands Papua Provincial Government, alongside the local governments of eight regencies, to reduce high living costs and curb inflation.

The PPP funds, managed by the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works, serve as an alternative financing scheme where the provision of public infrastructure is funded entirely or partially by the private sector, rather than relying solely on the State Budget (APBN).
