Highest in Indonesia, Pekanbaru Economic Growth Hits 7.39 Per Cent
PEKANBARU – In the second quarter of 2026, Pekanbaru’s economy grew by 7.39 per cent year-on-year (yoy), positioning Pekanbaru as the city with the highest economic growth in Indonesia.
This achievement was presented by the Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, during the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting and the Release of Regency/City Economic Growth for Q2 2026, held on Monday (7/9/2026). The meeting took place at the Ministry of Home Affairs Headquarters in Jakarta.
According to data presented by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Pekanbaru ranked first among cities with an economic growth of 7.39 per cent, followed by Batam at 7.28 per cent, Surabaya at 7.20 per cent, Makassar at 7.04 per cent, and Palopo at 6.97 per cent. Pekanbaru’s growth rate also exceeded the national economic growth for Q2 202_6, which was recorded at 5.29 per cent (yoy).
The Mayor of Pekanbaru, Agung Nugroho, welcomed the achievement with gratitude. He noted that while being the city with the highest economic growth is good news, the more important aspect is ensuring that this growth truly benefits the community.
“Alhamdulillah, this is proud news for the people of Pekanbaru. However, for us, it is not merely about being number one. The most important thing is that the city’s economy moves, investment grows, MSMEs thrive, jobs are created, and the benefits are increasingly felt by the community,” said Agung.
Agung stated that this achievement is the result of collaborative efforts from all elements of the city, including the public, the business community, MSME players, investors, and the government. Consequently, he expressed his appreciation to all parties who continue to maintain economic activity and confidence in Pekanbaru.
This growth momentum aligns with the increase in investment activities in Pekanbaru. Throughout January–June 2026, Pekanbaru’s realised investment was recorded at approximately Rp7.35 trillion, or 156.02 per cent of the target, with Q2 realisation reaching approximately Rp4.79 trillion.
“This confidence must be maintained. The government must continue to provide ease of doing business, improve services, build infrastructure, and create a safe, clean, and comfortable city. Because when investment and the business world move, we want the people of Pekanbaru to feel the impact,” said Agung.
He emphasised that the Pekanbaru City Government does not want to treat this growth figure as the final goal. The city government will continue to maintain the momentum to ensure that economic growth remains high-quality and sustainable.
“This 7.39 per cent figure is not the finish line. Rather, it is a responsibility for us to work harder. Growth must bring prosperity. If the economy grows, the community must also grow and reap the benefits,” he asserted.
Agung hopes this achievement will further strengthen the confidence of business actors and investors to make Pekanbaru one of the investment destinations and economic growth centres in Sumatra.
“Thank you to all the people of Pekanbaru. This achievement is not the success of the mayor or the government alone. This is our collective success. Let us maintain this momentum so that Pekanbaru becomes more advanced, its economy becomes stronger, and its people become more prosperous,” Agung concluded.
