High Waves Hit Gunungkidul's Southern Coast, Damaging Stalls and Fishing Boats
A video posted online shows high waves hitting Jungwok Beach in Jepitu, Girisubo, Gunungkidul today. SAR officials said the waves caused minor damage to one food stall at Jungwok Beach, while several boats were damaged at Baron Beach and Gesing Harbour.
“It was reported that wave monitoring in the Jungwok Beach area of Gunungkidul Regency on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, at around 07.00 WIB. Based on BMKG forecasts, the sea wave height in the waters of the Special Region of Yogyakarta currently ranges from 2.5 to 4.0 metres, which is categorised as High,” said the Instagram account @jogja_admin, as seen by detikJogja today.
“With wave heights reaching 2.5 to 4.0 metres, it is strongly advised not to engage in activities on the shoreline, swim, or go to sea. Avoid walking along open beaches and be cautious of large waves that can arrive suddenly,” the account continued.
Sunu Handoko Bayu Sagara, Coordinator of Satlinmas Rescue Istimewa Region I Gunungkidul, confirmed the incident. According to him, seawater reached the row of food stalls at Jungwok Beach.
“That is correct (there were high waves at Jungwok Beach). Only one stall at Jungwok Beach was affected, but it only suffered minor damage, with a small hole in the wall,” he said when contacted by detikJogja on Tuesday (11/8/2026).
Sunu added that the wave height has now decreased. However, he predicted that today’s high waves have not yet reached their peak.
“The waves are still high but are gradually decreasing. However, from Thursday night (13/8/2026) to Friday (14/8/2026), the sea waves are expected to be even larger,” he said.
Sunu explained that before the high waves occurred, stall owners had been urged to move their goods. This was done to minimise losses in the event of high waves.
“And not only stall owners, we also urged fishermen to move their boats to safe places. Therefore, when the waves increased like today, the impact was not so extensive,” he said.
Sunu added that his team had also issued warnings to tourists through social media.
“For tourists, we have been making educational videos and warnings through social media for several days, stating that there would be an increase in waves this week,” he said.
Meanwhile, Marjono, Coordinator of Satlinmas Rescue Istimewa Region II Baron Beach, said high waves also occurred at Gesing Harbour and Baron Beach. Marjono said the high waves caused damage to boats.
“As a result of the high waves, a number of boats in Gesing were damaged and are still being assessed,” he said.
Marjono also revealed that the same thing happened at Baron Beach, where several boats were dragged by the high waves.
“At Baron Beach, there were boats that were dragged and sank, but they have been evacuated,” he said.
