High Waves Batter Yogyakarta's Southern Coast
High waves have battered the southern coast of Java Island. Fishermen, tourists, and the general public active around the southern coast are urged to be more vigilant. “The high waves have been occurring since Monday evening (10/8),” explained Julianto Wibowo, Manager of the DIY Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Operations Control Centre.
As a result of the high waves, fishing boats were damaged, including at Baron Beach and Gesing Beach in Gunungkidul. One boat even sank at the dock. The high waves also caused damage to several buildings along the coast, such as at Baru Beach and Pandansimo Beach in Bantul Regency. Additionally, the high waves affected several structures at Trisik Beach and Glagah Beach.
In relation to the high waves, the Yogyakarta Meteorology Station (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding the potential for high waves to hit the waters of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This warning is in effect for three days, starting from Wednesday, 12 August 2026, until Friday, 14 August 2026. Based on official BMKG data, wave heights in the southern waters of DIY are estimated to reach between 2.5 and 4 metres, placing them in the high category.
BMKG stressed that waves of this height pose a high risk to the safety of maritime and coastal activities. Wave heights can also change at any time depending on the latest weather conditions. BMKG has advised that shipping activities be curtailed: fishermen, barge operators, ferry operators, and small boat users are urged to exercise extra caution when going to sea. People active around the southern coast of DIY are advised not to approach the shoreline and to remain alert to the potential for sudden large waves.
Residents are also urged to avoid swimming, fishing, or other water sports that risk endangering safety in coastal areas and to comply with instructions and directions given by local coastal security officers. The public is asked to continue monitoring weather and sea wave information updates regularly through the official channels of the BMKG Yogyakarta Meteorology Station.
