High Plastic Prices Cause Packaged Drinking Water Prices to Rise
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The high price of plastic has prompted actors in the packaged drinking water (AMDK) industry to increase their product prices since last week. General Chairman of the Packaged Drinking Water Companies Association (Aspadin) Firman Sukirman stated that AMDK producers have no other choice because plastic prices have skyrocketed. Plastic is currently a scarce and expensive commodity due to halted supplies of raw materials from West Asia, impacted by the war that has closed the Strait of Hormuz. “Not this week, but last week some have already raised prices,” said Firman when met at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/4/2026). Some types of plastic have even surged up to 70 percent from normal prices. This increase can no longer be borne and mitigated by AMDK producers through internal company efficiencies. They ultimately have to adjust AMDK selling prices due to the rising production cost components. “(AMDK) at retail has also gone up. At retail, it’s up,” Firman said. According to him, the price increase for AMDK ranges from Rp 2,000 to Rp 3,000 per carton. Nevertheless, he did not deny that producers would raise AMDK prices if the plastic issue is not resolved in the near future. “Some have raised by Rp 2,000, some by Rp 3,000 per carton, meaning per pack,” Firman explained. The entrepreneur emphasised that the AMDK industry is not only pressured by the rise in plastic prices. They are also faced with a shortage of plastic raw materials. In fact, the majority of AMDK products are packaged using plastic.
