High Gold Prices and University Fees Drive Indonesia's Inflation to 2.42% in April 2026
High gold prices and university fees are driving Indonesia’s inflation to 2.42% in April 2026.
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Inflation has struck all regions of Indonesia in April 2026, with the national rate standing at 2.42% (year on year/yoy) compared to April 2025. This inflationary pressure is lower than the previous month’s 3.48% (yoy), but still higher than the same period last year at 1.95%.
Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, explained that the main drivers of annual inflation in April 2026 were high inflation in the food, beverages, and tobacco sector at 3.06% yoy, with a contribution of 0.90%.
“The biggest inflationary commodities in this group are fresh fish, broiler chicken meat, rice, cooking oil, machine-rolled kretek cigarettes, and broiler chicken eggs,” said Ateng during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (4/5/2026).
In addition, commodities in the personal care and other services sector also became the main drivers of annual inflation in April 2026, specifically personal care and other services such as gold at 11.43% yoy, with a contribution of 0.77% to overall inflation.
“Inflation in that group mainly occurred in the gold jewellery category,” stated Ateng.
According to its components, all experienced annual inflation. The core component saw annual inflation of 2.44% with a contribution of 1.56%. The dominant commodities contributing to the core component were primarily gold jewellery, cooking oil, rice with side dishes, and university or academy tuition fees.
For the volatile price component, inflation was 3.37% with a contribution of 0.56%. The dominant commodities exerting inflationary pressure in this component include broiler chicken meat, rice, and broiler chicken eggs.
Meanwhile, the government-regulated price component experienced inflation of 1.53% with a contribution of 0.30%. The dominant commodities contributing to inflation in the government-regulated price component are primarily air transport tariffs, machine-rolled kretek cigarettes, and hand-rolled kretek cigarettes.
Ateng stated that inflation occurred across all regions of Indonesia, comprising 38 provinces. The highest was in West Papua at 5%, while the lowest was in Lampung at 0.53%.
