HIFU Technology at Abdi Waluyo Hospital Aids Early Detection of Fibroids
Jakarta — Women’s health remains a critical issue marked by the observance of International Women’s Day on 8 March. One prevalent condition affecting women is uterine fibroids (mioma), a thickening of the uterine muscle afflicting 40–80 per cent of women globally.
Sigit Pramono, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Abdi Waluyo Hospital, notes that mioma cases are similar to adenomiosis, as both involve muscle thickening that can affect the uterine cavity, bladder lining, or intestines.
Cases of mioma and adenomiosis continue to rise worldwide, including in Indonesia. In 2021, mioma incidence occurred in 40–80 per cent of women of reproductive age, with one-quarter of cases requiring surgical intervention.
Women are encouraged to increase awareness regarding mioma, as the condition often presents without noticeable symptoms. However, early detection is possible from a young age, with indicators including painful menstruation with heavy bleeding. Modern medical technology now facilitates detection without causing discomfort to patients.
HIFU technology represents one such advancement in diagnostic capabilities, enabling healthcare providers to identify fibroids earlier and less invasively than traditional methods.
