Hidayatullah Student Movement Urges Unity, Says Criticism Allowed If Civilised
The Central Board of the Hidayatullah Student Movement (PP GMH) has called on all parties to safeguard Indonesia. PP GMH hopes that unity will continue to be maintained.
This was conveyed by PP GMH Chairman Rizki Ulfahadi at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
The appeal was made after the organisation held discussions and observations regarding the current state of Indonesia.
“PP GMH views the dynamics of democratic life as an important part of Indonesia’s national journey. The freedom to express opinions, criticism, and aspirations is a constitutional right of every citizen that must be respected and guaranteed,” said Rizki.
He said that freedom of expression must go hand in hand with responsibility. PP GMH urged the public to prioritise humanitarian solidarity.
“For members of the public who have the ability to provide assistance and donations, they should consider channelling them to our brothers and sisters who are victims of disasters and are in great need of help,” said Rizki.
He then delivered an eight-point statement of position:
The expression of opinions, criticism, and aspirations is a constitutional right of citizens.
The importance of responsible democratic freedom.
Calling on all elements of society to express aspirations peacefully, orderly, and constitutionally.
Encouraging the government to continue opening space for dialogue with the public.
Reminding all parties to learn lessons from the riots that occurred a year ago.
Prioritising humanitarian solidarity by channelling aid and donations to disaster victims in need.
Supporting the strengthening of corruption eradication and law enforcement, including through the deliberation and passage of the asset forfeiture bill.
Maintaining unity, security, and public order.
He called on all parties to practise peaceful democracy. He said freedom and order must go together.
“We are not choosing between freedom and order; both must go together. We want a democracy that is alive but still peaceful. We want criticism that is sharp but still civil. We want freedom that is broad but still responsible,” said Rizki.
