Here's Why Hinata Shoyo Trained in Beach Volleyball in Haikyuu!!
In the world of sports anime, character transformations are often depicted through magical powers or instant motivation. However, Haruichi Furudate’s Haikyuu!! takes a different and very realistic approach through Hinata Shoyo’s journey to Brazil. Hinata’s decision to train in beach volleyball is not just an additional subplot, but a major foundation that transforms him into a world-class player.
Many fans wonder, why did Hinata have to go all the way to Rio de Janeiro just to play on the sand? The answer lies in Hinata’s limitations when he was still at Karasuno High School. Although he has extraordinary jumping ability, Hinata is very dependent on Kageyama Tobio’s sets and lacks basic skills such as receiving and setting.
In beach volleyball, which is played in a 2v2 format, there is no room to hide. A player must be able to serve, receive, set, and attack alternately. This forces Hinata to step out of his comfort zone as a specialist middle blocker and transform into an all-around player.
Running and jumping on sand is much more difficult than on a wooden floor. The unstable sand requires extraordinary core balance. This training automatically increases Hinata’s explosive power, allowing him to jump higher and more stably when he returns to the indoor court.
Outdoors, Hinata has to deal with strong winds and bright sunlight. This condition trains his instincts to read the movement of the ball more accurately. This ability helps him develop a wider vision on the court, an attribute that is very important for a short player.
Did you know that the initial idea for this training was supported by coach Washijo from Shiratorizawa? Although he initially underestimated Hinata, Washijo was the one who helped connect Hinata with contacts in Brazil because he wanted to see how far a “short player” could compete if equipped with perfect technique.
Hinata’s journey in Brazil was not easy. He had to face real-life challenges before he could finally touch the ball on a professional court:
After two years of training in beach volleyball, Hinata returned to Japan and joined the MSBY Black Jackals in the V.League. The results are very visible. He is no longer just a setter, but a real threat in every position. He is able to perfectly receive Kageyama’s hard serves and provide accurate sets to his teammates.
The reason Hinata trained in beach volleyball is the highest form of dedication to cover up his physical weaknesses with unwavering technique. Through the beaches of Brazil, Hinata proved that height is not a barrier as long as someone has the will to learn and adapt in the most difficult way possible. (Z-4)
