Herdman's reliance on domestic players has wide implications for national team development
Indonesia national team coach John Herdman’s decision to rely entirely on domestic players for the 2026 ASEAN Cup has wide strategic implications for the team’s development, the PSSI stated in an official release on Saturday. Firstly, it allows Herdman to build a consistent and cohesive tactical identity without having to adjust for diaspora players with differing playing styles. Secondly, by giving domestic players international competition opportunities, Herdman creates a competitive environment where local players feel valued and have clear career prospects. Thirdly, the strategy aligns with Herdman’s long-term development philosophy since the start of his tenure. By focusing on local players, Herdman can build a solid and stable generation that will form the backbone of the national team for years to come. In the 2026 ASEAN Cup, Indonesia is in Group A alongside Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Brunei Darussalam/Timor-Leste. Cambodia will be Indonesia’s first opponent on 27 July at Pakansari Stadium. They will then travel to Brunei and Timor-Leste on 31 July, followed by a match against Vietnam at Pakansari Stadium on 3 August, and finally face Singapore on 7 August. The group winners and runners-up will advance to the semi-finals. Indonesia has chosen the main stadium of Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta for their home matches in this stage.
