Hendri loses in the singles, wins doubles title at Future-4 tourney

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Hendri Susilo Pramono failed to fulfill his ambition to make a clean sweep at the Extra Joss Future-4 tournament at Kemayoran Tennis Center on Saturday as he only won the doubles event.

Hendri, who qualified for the tournament with a wild card entry, struggled hard but was outclassed by Park Seung-kyu of South Korea 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 7-6 (7-1) in the singles final.

With only 30 minutes rest, the Indonesian, partnering Febi Widhiyanto, earned the doubles title after comfortably beating Alan Mackin of England and Luben Pampoulov of Austria in the doubles final.

Park bagged US$1,950 as the tournament's champion while Hendri received $1,350. Hendri and Febi shared $945 as doubles champions while runner-ups Mackin and Pampoulov earned $495.

Hendri said after the match that he and Febi had made a solid teamwork to defeat Mackin and Pampoulov.

"The failure in the singles event even inspired me to win the doubles," he was quoted by satusports.com as saying.

It was the first win for Febi and Hendri during their participation in a Future tournament. In last week's series final here, the country's young hopes were eliminated by an old partnerships of Bonit Wiryawan and Sulistyo Wibowo.

"I'm happy with this result. We managed to save the doubles title so this is not an individual success," Febi added.

Hendri admitted he was used up after fighting Park for more than two hours in the singles final.

Park's coach Kyung San-kyu praised Hendri's performance.

"Hendri has a good volleying skill, but Park is more experienced. He got accustomed to competing in the Future series and he has reached the semifinals many times. He even won a series in South Korea," he said.

It was Park's second title after he won a Future tournament in Seoul in May. (ivy)
