Helping pregnant women

Without belittling the plight of flood victims, I was curious about the plight of pregnant women, and women close to giving birth, who are still staying at temporary shelters.

I am a member of Aliansi Pita Putih Jakarta, a group dedicated to promoting safe motherhood (in the survival of both the mother and the child). During "normal" times, the maternal and neo-natal mortality rate is already high; at this time of crisis, however, it can only be worse.

Although we cannot solve all of the problems contributing to maternal and neo-natal mortality, we are always looking for ways to help these women.

Access to health care is one of the crucial factors.

Though we cannot contribute much by way of cash or goods, Pita Putih of Jakarta is looking into facilitating access to health clinics such as Community Health Centers (Puskesmas), hospitals, or maternity clinics.

This would also require the cooperation of the respective health facilities.

The map and addresses of the Monitoring Posts (Posko) have been helpful in assessing the extent of the problem, and directing our activities.
