Helicopter Crashes in Saudi Arabia, 14 Killed
A helicopter belonging to the Saudi Arabian oil company, Aramco, has crashed in the Ras Tanura region. The accident claimed the lives of 14 people on board the aircraft.
According to AFP on Monday (29/06/2026), the incident occurred on Sunday (28/06). The dozen or so fatalities were all Saudi Arabian citizens.
“The accident claimed the lives of 14 passengers, all of whom were Saudi nationals,” stated the official Saudi news agency, Saudi Press Agency (SPA), quoting an official from the Ministry of Energy, adding that an investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the crash.
Aramco is known to operate more than 60 aircraft, including helicopters that serve over 300 helipads across Saudi Arabia. This fleet is one of the largest corporate fleets in the Gulf region.
The crash occurs amidst increasing energy sector activity in the oil-rich Gulf nations. Oil production has been ramped up following attacks from Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping lane that serves as one of the world’s primary routes for oil and gas exports.
Nevertheless, the Saudi Arabian government has not indicated that there are any signs that the helicopter crash is related to any attacks. During conflicts in the Middle East, several energy facilities in the Gulf region have previously been targeted by Iranian attacks.
Ras Tanura itself is home to one of the largest oil refineries in the Middle East, with a production capacity of up to 550,000 barrels per day. This refinery plays a vital role in the Saudi Arabian energy sector.
The facility has also been the target of several attacks in the past, including Iranian drone strikes at the beginning of the conflict, which caused fires and forced a partial halt to operations.
