Heirs of Online Motorcycle Taxi Driver Receive Rp238 Million BPJS Compensation Plus Child Scholarship
The heirs of the late Wahyudi Sugianto, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver in Sidoarjo, have received death benefit compensation amounting to Rp238 million. The compensation from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan also includes an educational scholarship facility for the deceased’s child, covering levels from kindergarten through to higher education.
In addition to the ojol driver’s family, compensation of Rp109,728,060 was handed over to Siti Rohma, the heir of the late Abdul Malik, a former official of Plaosan Village, Wonoayu District. The symbolic handover took place during the launch of the Social Security Awareness Movement for Employment within Neighbourhood Units and Places of Worship (Gardu Sosial) at the Jayandaru Monument, Sidoarjo Town Square, on Sunday (21/6).
Sidoarjo Regency Secretary Fenny Apridawati emphasised that the compensation handover serves as concrete proof of the importance of social security protection for informal or self-employed workers (Non-Wage Earners/BPU), such as ojol drivers, ensuring that bereaved families do not fall into extreme poverty. “This is evidence of the government’s presence in building a better life. If you join this programme, your relatives and children left behind will certainly have their education covered, thus preventing sudden impoverishment,” said Fenny.
Fenny detailed that the contribution for self-employed or informal workers is very affordable, at only Rp11,800 per month. For wage earners, the contribution is Rp16,800 per month, with full medical coverage benefits in the event of a workplace accident. Despite the substantial benefits offered, the level of public awareness in Sidoarjo is considered to still need boosting.
Head of the Sidoarjo Branch of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Arie Fianto Sofyan, revealed that currently only around 487,000 workers (39.60 per cent) in Sidoarjo are active participants. This means there are still approximately 631,000 working people in Sidoarjo who are unprotected and vulnerable to the risk of new poverty. “The challenge now is that many people still equate the function of BPJS Kesehatan with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. Through this Gardu Sosial programme, we are making neighbourhood units and places of worship into education centres,” explained Arie.
As an initial step, the Sidoarjo Regency Government also gave appreciation to RW 9 of Sidorejo Village, Krian, which successfully registered nearly 1,200 residents, and to the Al Barokah Mosque (Makah) in Sumput Village, which enrolled 42 participants, to serve as role models for the social security awareness movement in Sidoarjo.
