Hegseth: US economic stability depends on military superiority

Washington - The United States will not be able to maintain its economic stability without preserving military superiority, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said in an opinion piece published on Tuesday. “If America loses its undisputed military edge, no amount of fiscal savings will be able to maintain the economic health of this nation,” Hegseth wrote in the New York Post. He stressed that for decades the Pentagon has underpinned American prosperity, from supporting dollar dominance to protecting global trade. According to Hegseth, the world’s greatest military power provides stability, predictability, and nearly limitless economic advantages for the US. Without that superiority, he argued, US markets, investments, and jobs could be threatened by instability. “The greatest threat to America’s national security today is the lack of investment in military spending,” he said. US President Donald Trump previously announced that American automotive companies would begin producing weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and Patriot air defence systems. Meanwhile, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the move reflects the increasing militarisation of the US economy, after conflicts in the Middle East and weapons supplies to Ukraine depleted Washington’s military stockpiles.
