MALANG, East Java: Around 34,000 hectares of land in the
regency is in "critical condition", while the local
administration can only re-green three to four thousand hectares
of land annually.

Antara reported that a great portion of the critical areas is
in the five subdistricts of Ampelgading, Kalipare, Donomulyo,
Gedangan and Bantur, in South Malang.

Councilor Bibit Soeprapto called on the local administration
to accelerate rehabilitation efforts, and take steps to prevent
landslides from occurring in the areas during this rainy season.
