Several areas in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, were inundated by flooding caused by heavy rainfall that poured throughout Tuesday 24 February, affecting 1,920 households (KK).

“Yes, there is severe flooding at present on Jalan Yusuf Bauty, response teams have been directed to the location,” said Wahyudin, Head of Gowa’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), to CNNIndonesia.com on Wednesday 25 February.

The flooding was triggered by intense rainfall across South Sulawesi, resulting in floods in Gowa Regency.

“It is primarily due to high-intensity rainfall with prolonged duration, and upstream factors are also at play—the dam elevation has already reached 96.6, which will certainly have downstream impacts,” he explained.

According to Wahyudin, the flooding has affected approximately 1,920 households. He noted that several residents have chosen to evacuate to safer locations.

“According to the damage assessment by the rapid response team, around 1,920 households are affected, with 20 people having evacuated. Current water levels are reaching the knee height of adults,” he elaborated.

To date, several areas across South Sulawesi continue to be battered by rainfall of varying intensities, including Gowa Regency.

“We hope the rain will ease and water levels will recede quickly,” he said.
