Mataram (ANTARA) — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast the potential for extreme weather in the form of heavy rainfall, possibly accompanied by lightning and strong winds, hitting West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) through to early March 2026.

“We forecast cloudy conditions through to heavy rainfall lasting from 23 February to 1 March 2026,” said Anggi Dewita, a forecaster at the BMKG Climatology Station in NTB, in Mataram on Monday.

From 23 to 25 February 2026, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across the entire West Nusa Tenggara region, covering two cities and eight regencies.

Entering the period from 26 February to 1 March 2026, rainfall is forecast to continue at light to heavy intensity across broadly the same areas, with the possibility of accompanying lightning and strong winds.

Anggi said air temperatures during the week-long period are expected to range between 23 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius.

The BMKG has urged the public to heighten their vigilance against the potential impacts of extreme weather, including waterlogging, flooding, landslides and disruptions to transport activities.

According to earlier reports, extreme weather in NTB over the previous two days — featuring prolonged heavy rainfall — was caused by atmospheric disturbances.

Analysis of atmospheric dynamics revealed that the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin waves and low-frequency waves are currently active over the West Nusa Tenggara region.

Additionally, wind convergence and deceleration have been observed in the vicinity of NTB, along with relatively high humidity across various altitude layers and strong atmospheric instability supporting local-scale convective processes.
