Heavy Rain Until Saturday Night, 450 Agam Residents Displaced by Floods

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Agam Regency, West Sumatra, recorded that 450 residents were displaced and 60 people were trapped by flooding that struck Nagari Sungai Batang, Tanjung Raya District, on Saturday evening (18/6).

Head of Emergency and Logistics at BPBD Agam, Abdul Ghafur, stated in Lubuk Basung on Sunday that the 450 residents evacuated to relatives’ homes safe from the floodwaters. The displaced residents are spread across Jorong Kubu, Nagari Sungai Batang, where 200 people sought refuge after 50 houses were submerged in water up to 70 centimetres deep.

Abdul Ghafur explained that victims carried out self-evacuations, while others were evacuated by a joint team from BPBD Agam, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), the National Police, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and other agencies.

Meanwhile, in Jorong Labuah, 250 residents were displaced after 20 housing units were flooded to a depth of around 70 centimetres. The flooding inundated the two hamlets following heavy rainfall that hit the area from Saturday afternoon (18/7) until the evening.

Abdul Ghafur noted that this is a recurring flood, as the river has experienced siltation following a flash flood that struck the area at the end of November 2025. He added that there were no fatalities from this incident and the floodwaters have begun to recede, allowing some residents to start returning to their homes. However, he urged the public to remain vigilant and to evacuate immediately when rainfall is very heavy.
