Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in several points in Denpasar City and a landslide in Tabanan, Bali, on Wednesday (22/4).

Quoting detikBali, the heavy rain that lashed Denpasar City caused puddles and flooding in several spots. One of them was on Jalan Gunung Rinjani, Tegal Harum Village, West Denpasar. The flood occurred shortly after the heavy rain fell.

“It’s no longer the usual flood; it’s become a regular occurrence here. Earlier around 3 pm or so,” explained one resident, Hendra (23).

“If the rain is heavy, the flooding comes quickly. If it’s light, it’s normal. Earlier, the height was about 30 cm,” added the man from Tasikmalaya, who sells on Jalan Gunung Rinjani.

For three years, Hendra claims to have understood the flood cycle in the area. Even when the culverts had not been repaired, the flooding did not subside.

A similar situation occurred on Jalan Pondok Indah IV, Pemecatan Kaja, North Denpasar.

One resident, Ramadhan (32), said the area around his home has become prone to flooding during heavy rain.

“It’s normal now, but only when the rain is heavy does it flood, though it recedes quickly. When the rain stops, the water drains away soon,” he explained.

The afternoon flood reached a height of about 30 cm. Ramadhan recounted that a larger flood once occurred, turning the area around his home into something like a pool.

Landslide in Tabanan

Meanwhile, a landslide occurred on the western side of the road embankment connecting Peken Belayu Village with Kukuh Village, Marga Subdistrict, Tabanan.

The landslide was triggered by heavy rain that hit the Tabanan area, including Marga Subdistrict.

Marga Subdistrict Head I Gede Nengah Sugiarta said a follow-up landslide occurred on the western part of the embankment. The landslide material that fell into the Yeh Ge River below was quite large, even including an entire tree that was carried away.

As a result, large waves emerged, reaching the wantilan area of a temple beside the river.

“The landslide happened at 3 pm during heavy rain. Water eroded the soil from the first landslide, causing a follow-up landslide next to it,” said Sugiarta on Wednesday.

He explained that the route is under provincial authority. The subdistrict, along with community leaders and Tabanan DPRD member I Putu Eka Nurcahyadi, have reported the incident to the Bali Public Works Department.

“We hope it receives immediate attention to avoid larger incidents,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, heavy-tonnage vehicles are temporarily prohibited from passing through the route. There are concerns that the vehicle load could worsen the embankment condition.

Peken Belayu Village Head Ida Bagus Nyoman Parwata added that residents around the location have been advised not to carry out activities near the landslide area. This is to anticipate the potential for follow-up landslides.

They expressed concern about a third follow-up landslide that could endanger residents’ safety.

In addition, the owner of a business building making pelinggih near the landslide site has evacuated the place.

“Including the building next to it, we have also advised them to be vigilant against follow-up landslides,” he said.
