Heavy Rain Threatens 2026 Homecoming Rush, Observer Warns Roads Could Deteriorate Rapidly
Jakarta — Transport observer Deddy Herlambang has warned that high rainfall levels could present a significant challenge during the 2026 Lebaran homecoming rush, potentially accelerating road deterioration and disrupting travel for returning migrants.
“The current challenge is high rainfall. Road infrastructure will suffer if damaged roads are merely patched up,” Herlambang told Kompas.com on Monday, 9 March 2026.
According to the observer, heavy rain can worsen road conditions, particularly if repairs are only temporary in nature. This situation threatens to disrupt traffic flow along major routes used by homecoming travellers.
Beyond highways, Herlambang noted that weather conditions could affect other transport modes. “Railway infrastructure will not be optimally maintained because railway tracks frequently experience flooding, which requires separate mitigation efforts,” he said.
The aviation and sea transport sectors will similarly adjust operations according to weather conditions. “The aviation industry will adapt to ideal weather conditions for flight operations, whilst maritime or inland waterway transport will require good weather for safe sailing,” Herlambang explained.
He pointed out that the government’s provision of discounted transport fares for public transport users — including trains, aircraft, and vessels — along with free bus services operated by local authorities and private companies, could incentivise homecoming travellers to use mass public transport and abandon private vehicles.
“Using mass public transport has the potential to reduce accident rates on roads during the homecoming period,” he concluded.
