Heavy Rain Lashes Jakarta After Weeks of Dry Weather

Rain fell after the dry season had begun several weeks ago in Jakarta. Heavy rain poured down, including in the Cawang area of East Jakarta. Based on monitoring on Tuesday (4/8/2026) at 19.00, rain fell quite heavily around Cawang Station. Roads suddenly became wet, and the station roof channelled rainwater down onto the rail platform. Many train passengers were seen without umbrellas. They appeared to be running while crossing the tracks under the heavy downpour. Heavy rain also occurred in the Kebayoran area of South Jakarta. The rain worsened traffic congestion on the roads around Kebayoran Baru Station. Traffic on Jalan Sultan Iskandar Muda near Gandaria City was observed to be jammed. Not far from the capital, rain also drenched the Depok and Bojonggede areas of Bogor. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had previously predicted that the peak of the 2026 dry season would occur in August to September. BMKG forecasts that most areas in Java, Bali, and southern Kalimantan will be regions with the highest drought potential. Java is estimated to be one of the most vulnerable areas affected. In addition to rainfall remaining below normal until October, water demand in this region is also very high because it is a centre of agricultural activity and is inhabited by a dense population.
