Heavy rain and strong winds hit Denpasar, winds reaching 65 km/h
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit Bali, particularly in Badung and Denpasar, on Thursday 5 March 2026 around 00:14 WITA. The BMKG Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Denpasar Region III recorded wind speeds of 37 knots, or 65 km/h. ‘The maximum wind logged was 37 knots at 00:14 WITA, which is roughly 65 km/h,’ said Ni Putu Lia Cahyani, a forecaster with BMKG Denpasar Region III, to detikBali on Thursday 5 March 2026. She noted that typical wind speeds in Bali are around 5-20 km/h. Lia added that the potential for strong winds could still occur given that Bali is in an extreme weather period from 2-8 March 2026. This is linked to a tropical cyclone seed identified as 90S currently located in the southern Indian Ocean, directly south of Bali. ‘The potential for strong winds remains during this extreme weather period according to the bulletin we issued, and will be updated if extreme weather continues to threaten Bali,’ she explained. DetikBali has compiled reports of strong winds in several areas, including Canggu, Pererenan, Renon, Sidakarya and Sanur. Three large trees toppled in Denpasar. The trees fell at Jalan Pantai Padang Galak, Jalan Tukad Jinah, and Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Denpasar. ‘The Denpasar City BPBD-Damkar TRC has been deployed to carry out tree cutting,’ said Putu Darma Putra, an operator with Pusdalops BPBD-Damkar Kota Denpasar, on Thursday morning. The trees fallen were a banyan on Jalan Padang Galak, Denpasar Timur; a ketapang on Jalan Tukad Jinah, Denpasar Selatan; and a mahogany on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Denpasar. ‘There were no casualties in this incident,’ he added. Following the information, the Denpasar City BPBD-Damkar team continued with further handling, such as cutting the trees into smaller pieces to avoid disrupting residents’ activities.
