Heavy Equipment Truck Gets Stuck on Tendean Pedestrian Bridge, Driver Detained

A truck transporting heavy equipment became stuck under the pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta. The driver has been detained by police for questioning. “The driver is currently being handled,” said South Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Unit Head Kompol Mujiyanto when contacted on Tuesday (14/7/2026). The accident occurred around 00.30 WIB. Mujiyanto stated that his party is still examining the driver to uncover the chronology of events. “It is still under investigation. The priority right now is the traffic flow,” he said. In a separate statement, a report from the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) suggested the accident was caused by the driver playing with his mobile phone while driving. “The driver of the heavy equipment towing vehicle did not calculate the maximum height of the load,” read the BPBD Jakarta statement. The truck, with registration number B-9077-UFU, was travelling along Jalan Kapten Tendean. Upon reaching the location, the driver saw the pedestrian bridge. However, allegedly because he was focused on his mobile phone while driving, the driver did not account for the height of the load he was carrying until it got stuck on the bridge. “The driver saw the JPO but was unaware as he was focused on his handphone,” the BPBD wrote. “As a result, because he did not calculate the maximum height of the load being transported, the unit snagged on the JPO, causing the bridge to suffer quite severe damage,” said the BPBD. Based on documentation received from the BPBD, the truck carrying an excavator was seen in the middle of the road. The heavy impact from the truck caused severe damage to the bridge’s support structure. One of the JPO’s supporting pillars appeared nearly collapsed. The collision rendered the stairs of the bridge unusable.
